Re: 4.3 mercruiser problems in my limited but humble experience the fuel pump is a good place to start - especially if it seems to be running ok. If it is reunning really ritch, you might look down the carb to see if you can see gas running down into the intake - debris in the needle valves or sunk float can do that sort of thing.
