At the time, some " social Darwinists " such as Francis Galton proffered a theory of interpersonal competition and natural hierarchy. The political relevance of ideas first espoused in Mutual Aid is being rediscovered by the new generations of social movements across the planet. Written partly in response to Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution is a book by Peter Kropotkin on the subject of mutual aid, written while he was living in exile in England. It was first published by William Heinemann in London in October 1902.
